Ireland to New Zealand Migration

A visualisation of Irish surname distribution across NZ

It’s estimated that one in six Kiwis are of Irish extraction, so we thought we’d give 800,000 down here a helping hand to understand which part of the emerald isle your people may have come from. And for a similar number in Ireland - a little insight into where your forebearers may have ended up. We’ve taken some of the most common surnames in Ireland by county and mapped them to historical immigration data from New Zealand – 1820 to 1965. Not much Sligo representation in the old days – certainly in Wellington – but rest assured it’s a work in progress!

On the tech side, getting geospatial mapping right is interesting. Superimposing county boundaries across three discrete geopolitical areas with very old, ‘near complete’ address data wasn’t without its challenges. But many organisations can benefit from simple, reliable, descriptive visuals in order to get started with data driven decisions. They can give a perspective on where your clients are, and how they might move over time. So, let’s hear from you…we’ve done the hard foundational work!
