Public Data Portal with ML-Powered Regional Analytics
Turning 50+ data sources into publicly accessible intelligence. 1M+ records monthly powering investment decisions.
The Problem
Our client, a regional development agency, was responsible for the economic development and promotion of their region. They needed an integrated data platform with business intelligence and geospatial capabilities to combine data from a wide variety of sources, including local councils, tourism operators, and economic indicators, and make it accessible to promote the region as a place to live and work.
Data was siloed across numerous stakeholders with no centralised infrastructure. The agency issued an open RFP for a long-term cloud data platform and associated services, receiving submissions from twenty national and international competitors.
The challenge was not just technical. The platform needed to produce public-facing visualisations that were intuitive and accessible to citizens, businesses, and policymakers alike.
The Mahi
DataSing were selected through a competitive RFP process, with our configurable data engineering solution identified as a key differentiator. We implemented our Tūī platform, an Azure-native architecture incorporating storage, warehousing, ingestion, and machine learning components.
We designed a scalable data engineering framework capable of handling over fifty distinct data sources, each with unique processing requirements and update frequencies. We built automated ETL processes, data quality monitoring, and validation frameworks, and developed data models for regional analysis including geospatial data from city councils.
We developed interactive Power BI dashboards with geospatial capabilities, providing insights into regional economic performance, tourism patterns, population trends, and demographic shifts. We provided advice and training to consumer teams and assisted with security certification, accreditation, and Privacy Impact Assessments.
Fortnightly commercial governance and weekly operational meetings allowed us to refine the backlog and reprioritise as needed. For example, we were able to ingest GIS data from council stakeholders at pace without affecting broader service delivery.
The Outcome
The platform was provisioned within six weeks and now processes over one million records monthly across all pipelines, with 99.9% pipeline reliability and zero platform outages since deployment.
Data processing time has been reduced by 75%, with 90% of routine data tasks fully automated. The internal team has been upskilled to a 60:40 self-service model, ensuring the operation can be sustained long-term.
The platform's insights are publicly accessible through a regional data portal, changing how the agency communicates the region's story to prospective residents, businesses, and investors. Interactive dashboards cover economic performance, tourism, population, demographics, and environmental monitoring.
DataSing's outputs now form a critical part of the agency's public-facing communications, and our partnership continues to adapt as the variety, volume, and velocity of regional data evolves.
